GOD'S WORD
The secret to knowing the Lord God is understanding that He is the One Who reveals Himself to us. He has revealed His character, nature, His will, His purposes, and plans through His Word. His actions are never separated from His Word. What He has said, He eternally does. That is the essence of integrity: the Word and the deeds match perfectly.
It makes perfect sense that the key to knowing God is found in delighting in His Word. In knowing His Word, we learn to seek Him with our whole heart, with the whole of life. Since it is HIS Word, I need Him to teach me what it means. That is what Jesus Christ promised that the Holy Spirit would do as we seek Him. The Holy Spirit makes the Word of God what it is to us: alive, active, penetrating, discerning, convicting, encouraging, faithful, and life transforming.
Tim Keller wrote that we become fiercely devoted to Scripture because we identify the Word with its Author.
Isaiah
55:6-11
Seek the LORD while He may be found, call on Him while He is near. Let
the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and He
will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will freely pardon. “For
My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “As
the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My
ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the
earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so
is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
The Lord is not hiding Himself from you. He wants to reveal
Himself to you. He has provided His Word as that means. He will help you understand
what you could not understand on your own. He is for you. However, as C. S. Lewis
wrote, “The atheist cannot find God for the same reason the thief cannot find a
policeman.” The Lord has given to humanity the singular, the utterly unique way
for us to know Him and to become, in Him, the person we were created to be. It
is in Jesus Christ that we see God most fully revealed. Jesus said, “If you
have seen me, you have seen the Father.” He stated as well, “No one comes to
the Father except through me.” He is near. Seek Him. He is listening for the
sound of the voice of your heart. Call on Him. Turn around!
