 PURPOSE

The Law of God given to Israel and the Sermon on the Mount given by Jesus Christ, the Word of God Incarnate, have the same purpose.

They both describe Life as it should be lived in order to know God and be reconciled to Him. Both the Law and the Sermon on the Mount, are also like mirrors exposing the true inner character of every human from Eden till now. No one, except for Jesus Christ, has ever lived a life in perfect harmony with the Law of God and Jesus' own sermon. Mankind is NOT "basically good" and any true student of human history would confirm that fact. God's Word makes that crystal clear.

Humans can't ever consistently keep God's Law for to be "made righteous" by keeping the Law requires that you never, ever, ever break even one of God's Laws. Even if you kept the Law for 100 years perfectly and on your 101st birthday, you break one Law, it would be as if you never, ever, ever, even kept one of God's Laws. The Sermon on the Mount reveals the same, mankind's utter dependence on God to save us. 

The Sermon on the Mount and God's Law were both given to show the impossibility of any person to save themselves and restore their life to God in wholeness and peace. Jesus Christ fulfilled them all. 

It is only when the Holy Spirit come to live Jesus' Life within you after you believed the Gospel that true supernatural life-change begins to take place. One must believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, an historic Person Who lived a perfect life and sacrificed Himself to death on a Roman cross to pay the debt of sin owed by the whole human race. He was raised from the dead by the Holy Spirit, defeating sin, death, hell and the grave. Salvation is offered as an unmerited gift from God for all who will believe.

It is by God's grace and power that one is "born from above", Life given by the will and power of God, not human effort. God has given us His Law that a Sermon on the Mount to drive us to His grace, to move us to finally trust and believe Him and become a new creation.
